General Surgeon

Dr. Edward Cheong

PanAsia Surgery

Dr Edward Cheong is a senior upper gastrointestinal (GI) surgeon with more than a decade’s experience providing a full spectrum of laparoscopic GI surgery and endoscopic treatment for early upper GI cancer. He completed his specialist training at The Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital in the UK. In 2008, Dr Cheong completed a prestigious post-CCT surgical fellowship in minimally invasive oesophagectomy (MIO), minimally invasive oesophageal/gastric surgery, and endoscopic treatment of oesophageal and gastric cancer with the world-renowned MIO pioneer, Professor James D. Luketich at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, USA. Prior to joining PanAsia Surgery, Dr Cheong was senior consultant oesophago-gastric and laparoscopic surgeon at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) in the UK from 2010-2022. He was also the upper GI cancer director, who introduced MIO and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS). For 12 consecutive years since 2010, NNUH has been recognised in the UK and internationally as having the shortest length of stay after upper GI cancer surgery and MIO, as published in the NOGCA (National Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer Audit in UK). This is an excellent marker of low post-operative complication (an important factor which has a positive impact on the long-term survival of patients after cancer surgery). Since 2016, Dr Cheong has been the Co-director and Trainer at the Minimally Invasive Gastrectomy and Esophagectomy Course (sponsored by the European Society of Surgical Oncology, and Intuitive DaVinci Robotic Surgery) at the University Medical Centre, Utrecht, Netherlands with Professors Richard van Hillegersberg and Jelle Ruurda. He is also the programme director for MIO fellowships supported by the European Society of Disease of the Esophagus (ESDE). Dr Cheong was the recipient of the Inaugural Dr James D. Luketich Chairman International Award in 2017. It was presented to the most outstanding international graduate whose academic and clinical achievements have exemplified the innovative spirit of progress and commitment to cardiothoracic surgical excellence. This was the first award presented to a surgeon outside North America. Dr Cheong was also the recipient of the National Award in UK by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) celebrating NHS 70th Birthday in UK “Driving Improvements – Top Doctors who have made a difference to the NHS” in July 2018. Dr Cheong is also frequently invited as a speaker around the world to present topics related to his areas of interest and expertise, especially ERAS and MIO
