Subspecialty: Foot and Ankle Disorders, and Sports Injuries

Dr Tan is a fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon with sub-specialty interests in Foot and Ankle disorders and Sports injuries. He graduated from the National University of Singapore and underwent his orthopaedic surgical training in Singapore. He was awarded the College of Surgeons Gold Medal upon completion of his advanced specialty training. He went on to complete fellowship training in Foot and Ankle Reconstruction at the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital in Germany under the renowned Professor Zwipp and at the Foot and Ankle Reconstruction Institute in the United States with Dr Mark Myerson, a world leader and pioneer in Foot and Ankle Surgery.

During his practice at NUH, Dr Tan mainly subspecialized in lower limb and foot and ankle disorders. He is an Assistant Professor and also the Program Director for Foot and Ankle surgery at NUH. He is still one of the few active members from Singapore in the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS). During this period, Dr Tan set up a fellowship training program in the division which has trained surgeons from the region in Foot and Ankle reconstruction.

Subspecialty clinical skills include management of:

1. Sports injuries and arthroscopy of the Foot and Ankle.

2. Foot and Ankle trauma.

3. Forefoot defects such as Hallux Valgus (Bunions) and hammer toes.

4. Foot deformities such as flatfeet and cavus feet in adults and children.

5. Ankle arthritis with osteotomy, arthrodesis and ankle replacement.

6. Sports injuries and knee arthritis including knee arthroscopy, ligament reconstruction and knee replacement.

Dr Tan has also been a Visiting Consultant at the Sports and Orthopaedic Clinic at the University Health Centre, NUS where he has treated many sports injuries in University students and staff. He has a strong interest in Foot and Ankle disease education and has been invited as a course leader and faculty in various courses and also as a guest lecturer both locally and in the region.
